Learners representing the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT) have once again demonstrated the strength of the region’s technical talent, bringing home two medals from the WorldSkills UK National Finals held in Wales.
Three GBSIoT teams competed in the Industry 4.0 category following strong performances in the national qualifiers. Joining competitors from across the UK, the teams showcased the collaborative power of GBSIoT partners, drawing on the combined strengths of Birmingham City University (BCU), BMet, Aston University Engineering Academy, and University College Birmingham.
The gold medal was awarded to Joe Blackman, GBSIoT Innovate Lead and final-year Engineering student at BCU, and James Baker, a recently graduated BMet engineering apprentice working with Pilgrim’s Europe. Their success reflects both their technical capability, hard work and the value of pathways that link education directly with industry.
The bronze medal was secured by Ashraf Ali Khan Royalpet, a recent BCU graduate now employed by PowTechnology, and Salman Ifran, a student at Aston University Engineering Academy.
A special mention for Isaac, from University College Birmingham, who competed independently after his teammate was forced to withdraw at short notice. He impressed the judges with his knowledge and perseverance and hopes to return next year.
Professor Rosa Wells, Chair of the National Network of Institutes of Technology, said:
“I am incredibly proud of GBSIoT teams’ fantastic success at WorldSkills UK. Their achievements showcase the outstanding talent being developed through Institutes of Technology and the vital role the National Network plays in equipping learners with the future-ready skills our industries need. Huge congratulations to all involved.”
We’d like to thank GBSIoT Operations Manager Dr Mairi Kerin and GBSIoT team trainer Kolawole Peter Adeyeye for their efforts in preparing the teams over the last year and supporting the teams throughout the competition process.
Participating in skills competitions forms an important part of the GBSIoT approach, enabling learners to test themselves under pressure, apply advanced technical knowledge, and gain experiences that support both progression and employability. The results this year underline the impact of the Institute of Technology model, bringing together further education, higher education, and industry to develop high-level skills in priority sectors.
Darran Marks, GBSIOT Operations Director said:
“The entire GBSIoT team is proud of our competitors performances at the WorldSkills UK National Finals. Simply reaching this stage is a testament to their technical expertise and personal commitment. The dedication of the training team, working collaboratively across providers to prepare learners for competition is no small achievement. To see that effort rewarded with both a Bronze and a Gold medal is truly outstanding. It cements GBSIoT’s place in the West Midlands as a place to skill up and be future ready in Industry 4.0”.
