On Wednesday 16th October Directors of 4 local engineering and manufacturing firms shared vital careers insight and advice with a group of 50 full time Engineering students at Walsall College as part of the Next Gen Makers Engineering Careers Roadshow.
Daniel Burton of RSD Pressings, Tony Fox of Currie & Warner, Terry Knight of SMB Pressings and Neil York of Mueller Europe participated in a Q&A forum and networking with students in the first event of this format in the Roadshow.
In a wide-ranging discussion, Daniel, Tony, Terry and Neil talked about their routes into Engineering, their careers to date, successes, challenges, the companies that they help to run and what they look for in Apprentices.
Held at Walsall College’s £2million Engineering Centre, the event succeeded in its’ goal of providing careers-based insight direct from employers to full time Engineering students, generating awareness and positively influencing perceptions of Engineering career prospects at these types of companies.
Following the Q&A Forum students were encouraged to network with the 4 delegates, with many taking the opportunity to do so, asking about work experience and Apprenticeship opportunities.
The Q&A Forum format within the Next Gen Makers Engineering Careers Roadshow moves on to Sandwell College on the 23rd October, with delegates from Mapei UK, Handicare Stairlifts UK, Evans & White Manufacturing and Central Scanning involved.
