Birkenhead based shipbuilding firm Cammell Laird have welcomed 50 first year apprentices following a successful recruitment campaign.

Building on the success of previous years, this group of apprentices will undertake their training and education with The Engineering College including spending the first year of their apprenticeship in the college’s industry standard workshops, learning the foundations of their trade alongside skilled tutors.

The new apprentices include 19 platers, 20 welders, six mechanical, two pipe, two shipwrights and one rigger.

Mike Hill, Managing Director of Cammell Laird, said, “Cammell Laird is extremely proud of our ongoing relationship with The Engineering College.

“We have worked hard to establish an award-winning apprenticeship programme in partnership with our local colleges. This ensures future opportunities and long-term sustainability for young people in our community.

“I am delighted that our 2023 recruitment has been so successful and wish the apprentices every success in their journey with our company.

Terry Weston, Chief Executive of The Engineering College, added, “Apprentices training at The Engineering College are taught by our technical staff who themselves have been drawn from across various sectors of the engineering industry, a number of whom have worked and excelled in their trade areas at Cammell Laird.

“Apprentices have the opportunity to train within a community of engineers and alongside apprentices from other sectors, sharing their learning experiences and benefitting from the advice and guidance they receive from a cross-section of other engineering experienced industry professionals – people with real-life experience, many of whom began their journey as apprentices themselves.”
