A robot is a machine that does tasks without the help of a person, and they do only what a person has built or programmed them to do.

An industrial robot, for example, is an armlike machine that can turn at several joints. It has a hand like part to grasp and hold things. Motors move the parts.


An industrial robot is made of three main components:

1. Mechanics which represent what you actually see of the robot. This part is important for robot’s precision, speed and payload.

2. Electronics allows the command system to drive all motors and get environment information from sensors.

3. Computer science which makes the robot intelligent through the collaboration with the robot environment and the user


Most industrial robots are used in factories. Some robots load, move, and unload materials. Others are used on assembly lines to help build things such as cars and appliances.

Robots are especially useful because they can do things that could be dangerous for people. For example, they can be sent deep underwater or into space. Robots can also handle dangerous materials such as radioactive waste or harmful chemicals. They can even dispose of bombs or do spy work for the military.

According to the Future of Jobs report produced by the World Economic Forum, the robot revolution will create 97 million new jobs including technology industries like artificial intelligence, and by 2025, employers will divide work between human and machines equally. Roles that leverage human skills will rise in demand. There will be a surge in demand for workers who can fill green economy jobs, roles at the forefront of the data and artificial intelligence economy, as well as new roles in engineering, cloud computing and product development.

One such job is a Robotics Engineer. Robotics Engineers are the people that design and build machines to do automated jobs in industries like manufacturing, aerospace and medicine. According to the National Careers Service, the average annual starting salary for a Robotics Engineer is £27,500, ranging up to £55,000 when experienced.

You can get into this job through a university course, a college course or following an apprenticeship.
For example, you can do a college course, which may help you to find a job as a Robotics Technician. Relevant courses include:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Robotics and Automation
  • Level 4 Diploma in Computing
  • Higher National Certificate in Electrical or Electronic Engineering

With further training, you can qualify as an engineer.
